Creative Minds, Strategic Moves: A Dynamic Workshop with Teesside University at BINUS @Medan
On Thursday, October 16, 2025, the atmosphere at XPERIENCE SPACE BINUS @Medan transformed into a vibrant hub of ideas and inspiration. A total of 143 students from the International Trade and Business Digital program gathered for a workshop titled “Creative Minds, Strategic Moves: The Making of a Creative Industry Entrepreneur.” The session featured Dominic Dunn from Teesside University as the keynote speaker, who shared deep insights on how creativity can be harnessed as a strategic force in building businesses within the creative industry.
Dominic Dunn is a seasoned digital media practitioner and academic with over a decade of experience in the UK’s creative sector. He currently serves as Principal Lecturer and Associate Dean (International) at Teesside University, where he is actively involved in global academic partnerships and teaches in the Digital Art & Animation program. His research focuses on immersive technologies such as AR, VR, and XR, with a strong emphasis on user interaction and digital experience. He also leads TUCan Digital Studio, a commercial and knowledge exchange unit that bridges applied research with industry through innovative digital projects.

The workshop was highly interactive, with students enthusiastically engaging in discussions. One particularly thoughtful question came from Putri Ambarwati, who asked, “How can someone keep their creativity strong while running a business? Like, how can you make sure it doesn’t get stuck? For example, how do you find new ideas or things to develop? As human beings, we can’t always be creative. So what happens when we get stuck and are no longer creative?” This sparked a meaningful conversation about the importance of cultivating creative habits, staying curious, and continuously exploring new perspectives. Dominic emphasized that creativity is not just about sudden inspiration, but a continuous process that can be nurtured—especially in the ever-evolving digital business landscape.
More than just theory, the workshop offered practical insights that students could immediately apply. Putri Ambarwati reflected, “Attending the seminar on creativity was such an inspiring experience for me. I came in thinking creativity was just about art or design, but I left realizing it’s actually a mindset—a way of seeing possibilities everywhere. The speaker shared a lot of real examples about how small ideas can turn into powerful digital brands through creativity and consistency.”

Nicholas Alvian highlighted how Dominic used examples of influential figures like J.K. Rowling to illustrate authentic creativity. “According to Mr. Dunn, creativity has no limits within the human mind, meaning we can continue to grow endlessly through the power of our own creativity,” he shared.
Toni Gunawan also praised the session, saying, “The seminar was exciting, and the content was very relevant and aligned with today’s needs. The speaker wasn’t monotonous—he was very flexible in delivering the session. Looking forward to the next seminar at BINUS Medan!”

Oscaneo Orlando Luis added his perspective as a new student: “In my opinion, the topic presented by the speaker was incredibly valuable because it opened our minds as new students, especially in this era of digital globalization. As the younger generation, we must be able to adapt and think creatively to discover brilliant innovations. With the presence of AI, students can be further supported in brainstorming new ideas in a positive way. Therefore, I believe the seminar was excellent and truly broadened our perspective as new students who are eager to start or develop something meaningful in today’s era.”
This workshop reaffirmed BINUS @Medan’s commitment to delivering global learning experiences that align with the demands of today’s industries. It demonstrated that creativity and business strategy are not separate domains, but rather complementary forces that shape the future of entrepreneurship. By engaging with international experts like Dominic Dunn, BINUS students are empowered to become adaptive, innovative, and globally competitive leaders in the creative and digital economy.
