Write up from the International Office
‘Marco, the Italian COO of a technology company in Mumbai, can’t motivate his Indian employees. Anat, an Israeli management consultant working in the United States, struggles to give “American style” feedback. Seungwoo, the CEO of a Korean software firm with a new Shanghai office, has trouble retaining Chinese staffers. ‘ Professor Andrew Molinsky of Brandeis University, in the January 2012 Harvard Business Review, gave us examples of challenges that future managers could face.
“Ability to work well with others” (Zupek 2011) and having a “global mind-set” (Javidan 2010) that includes:
Intellectual capital: Global business savvy, cognitive complexity, cosmopolitan outlook
Psychological capital: Passion for diversity, quest for adventure, self-assurance
Social capital: Intercultural empathy, interpersonal impact, diplomacy
are vital skills and qualities to be acquired by today’s university students, workers and professionals who want to explore global employability or thrive in a global environment.
As BINUS UNIVERSITY strives to be a world-class university, we see the need to encourage our students to develop a global mind-set. To this goal, we have continued in develop meaningful partnerships with outstanding institutions all around the world.
Some of our newest partners include:
- The University of Nottingham, United Kingdom (UK Top 10 and World Top 75 university)
- Emporia State University, USA(Our first US institutional partner; AACSB accredited business school)
- Chinese Culture University, Taiwan (One of the top private Taiwanese universities that is celebrating her 50th anniversary)
- Dong-A University, South Korea (Top private university in the southern part of the South Korea)
- Fujian Normal University, China (Highly-ranked university in China)
Please see here for our full partners list.
With many partners, we have established and continue to expand double-degree offerings, meaning students of relevant programs can spend time both in BINUS and partner institutions and get degrees from both universities. In 2011, about eighty students went abroad to pursue such an advantage.
Besides double-degree, many of our students go abroad for one or two semesters as part of bilateral exchange. We currently have students from the U.S.A, Malaysia, France, South Korea and Thailand studying at BINUS as exchange students. Also, we have some BINUS students studying overseas, such as in Germany, Czech Republic, Thailand, South Korea and at least seven students who are studying overseas for one or more semesters on full scholarships by various governing bodies, including the South Korean government. Not to mention, as the first Indonesian university to be part of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), we automatically have access to a network of over 200 institutions for our students to explore exchange opportunities with.
What is more, this end of year break (July and August) , we are offering BINUS students a variety of destinations to explore two to five week short courses with international institutions we work with (SC2012). These include places in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and China.
BINUS is truly becoming more internationalized as we have more groups of students from overseas visiting us for learning trips, such as from the College of Management, Yuan Ze Unviversity, Taiwan, in February 2012, and nearly forty students from Woosong University, South Korea, spent a week with us the same month. We are also expecting other groups in the future, including undergraduates from the Marshall School of Business from the University of Southern California, U.S.A.
Come join us on this international journey as you prepare your mind for a truly globalized future.
