BINUS university provides free public access to open and green spaces as part of our commitment to the green campus concept. We believe that green spaces not only enhance the beauty of the campus but also support sustainability.

  • Green Campus Policy and Sustainable Initiatives: Our university, like BINUS University in Alam Sutera, advocates for the Green Campus concept as an initiative to address climate change. This policy includes the management of open and green spaces that are accessible to the public. The construction and development of BINUS University consider various environmental aspects, with campus buildings designed to enhance air circulation through large windows and maximize natural lighting. This approach aims to minimize electricity use and reduce the campus’s carbon footprint, while the existing green spaces contribute to improving air quality and creating a more pleasant environment.

 

 

 

 

 

  • Green Space Facilities: We have several facilities, such as:
    • Educational Garden: This garden serves as a learning space for students and the community, equipped with comfortable seating areas for discussions, outdoor seminars, and community activities.

 

 

 

 

    • Open Space for Events: A large area that can be utilized for various community activities, such as concerts or environmental festivals.

 

 

 

 

 

  • Pedestrian Pathways: Well-maintained pedestrian pathways connect various green spaces and facilities, encouraging walking and cycling within the campus, promoting a healthier lifestyle and reducing reliance on vehicles.

BINUS University is dedicated to the recording and preservation of intangible cultural heritage, encompassing local folklore, traditions, language, and knowledge. The following initiatives exemplify the university’s commitment to these objectives:

  1. BeeLintang: This ensemble comprises employees, faculty, students, and alumni of BINUS who perform kolintang music. Through BeeLintang, BINUS not only provides aesthetic enjoyment through the exquisite melodies of kolintang but also plays a significant role in preserving Nusantara culture, particularly this traditional art form, which features a percussion instrument originating from Minahasa.
  2. Automated Angklung: This initiative aims to safeguard the angklung, a traditional musical instrument from West Java that was recognized by UNESCO in 2010 as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The program seeks to educate younger generations about the importance of preserving traditional musical instruments while promoting technological advancements.
  3. BESTARI BIPA:This program offers instruction in Indonesian for Speakers of Other Languages (BIPA), organized by BINUS. It actively supports the preservation of the Indonesian language and culture on a global scale, reaching participants from 45 countries.

Through these initiatives, BINUS University demonstrates its proactive role in the recording and preservation of intangible cultural heritage.

BINUS University actively contributes to local arts through a significant number of public performances, exceeding 30 in total during 2023, conducted by students, staff, and faculty. The following examples illustrate this commitment:

  1. BeeLintang: Known as “BINUSIAN Berseni dengan Kolintang,” this group showcases numerous performances at both local and international levels. Through BeeLintang, BINUS has brought kolintang to the international stage, participating in the Best of ASEAN Performing Arts.
  2. Automated Angklung: BINUS presented an automated angklung performance at the Jakarta Innovation Days (JID) 2023. Unlike traditional angklung played manually, this version is designed using computer programs to adapt to the selected songs, showcasing innovation in musical performance.
  3. PARAMABIRA: This student choir unit engages in various performances throughout the year with diverse themes. One notable event is the “Ring of Songs,” an annual concert. PARAMABIRA has also achieved recognition by winning competitions at both national and international levels.
  4. STAMANARA: This student activity unit focuses on dance and organizes numerous performances, both hosted by BINUS and external parties.
    Additionally, information about these performances is actively shared on social media platforms by each community, ensuring that the broader public is informed and engaged with the arts initiatives at BINUS University.

Through these initiatives, BINUS University demonstrates a robust engagement with the local arts community, significantly contributing to the cultural landscape.

BINUS University provides public access to museums, exhibition spaces, and works of art and artifacts, promoting creativity and artistic expression. BINUS University initiates virtual art exhibitions that are open to the public, allowing broader access to artistic works. Art students are invited to publish their creations, enhancing their visibility and recognition by international artists.

On-site exhibitions include:

  • Final Project Exhibition: The “Design. Designer. Designest” event allows students from Visual Communication Design, Interior Design, and Interactive Design and Technology to showcase their projects, expressing their emotions and creativity.
  • IFFEST 2023: This annual Interior and Furniture Design Festival features final project exhibitions and various activities, encouraging the public to explore spaces in society that blend commercial needs with everyday activities.

In the virtual realm:

  • INACADE: The International Academic on Contemporary Art and Design Exhibition is a platform for discussions and exhibitions of contemporary artwork from various countries, attended by academics in art and design.
  • Digital Exhibition by DKV BINUS: Showcases artwork from all students in the Visual Communication Design program.
  • Beyond Reality: A virtual space for exploring and experimenting with art, consistently themed around Indonesia’s traditional culture.
  • Creative Icon 2023: This exhibition presents works from the Creative Advertising students, combining elements of fine arts and modern technology.

Through these initiatives, BINUS University ensures free access to artistic expressions and cultural events, inviting the public to engage with and appreciate the creative works of its students.

BINUS University provides public access to its libraries, including books and publications, to support educational opportunities for a wider audience. The Library and Knowledge Center (LKC) offers open access services, allowing users to independently access collections. An automated service enhances the user experience, and the LKC is registered with the National Library of Indonesia, highlighting its commitment to preserving valuable resources for both the academic community and the general public.

Additionally, the university has a dedicated website for scientific journals, which can be accessed by the public at https://journal.binus.ac.id/home/. This platform allows users to view and download various publications for free, ensuring that not only BINUS students and lecturers but also educators and the general public can benefit from these resources, thereby promoting collaboration and knowledge sharing.

BINUS University provides public access to buildings and cultural heritage, contributing to community engagement and education.

  • Public Access to Campus Buildings: The BINUS University @ Malang campus, inspired by Candi Tikus, is open to the public. This access allows the community to appreciate the architectural significance of the campus, which serves as a cultural landmark.
  • Virtual Museums: BINUS University has developed several virtual museums that are freely accessible to everyone:
  • BINUS Museum: This museum showcases the history of BINUS University from its founding to the present, making it available to the public for educational purposes.
  • AI for Cultural Heritage Museum at Lasem: This initiative focuses on documenting the Museum Nyah Lasem, providing access to its unique architectural features and artifacts through digital technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).
  • Ondel-Ondel Virtual Museum: Dedicated to Ondel-ondel, a cultural icon of the Betawi community, this virtual museum educates the public about its significance and heritage, highlighting its role in Betawi culture. It is accessible online, ensuring that this important cultural aspect reaches a wider audience.

  • Public Service: BINUS collaborates with Samsat Jakarta Barat to provide services for the extension of driver’s licenses (SIM) and vehicle registration certificates (STNK). This service is open to both BINUS and the public

Through these initiatives, BINUS University actively promotes public engagement with significant cultural heritage, ensuring that while not all buildings may have free access, the university fosters a rich educational experience for the community.

BINUS University is aware of sustainable development. One of the example is the development of BINUS Alam Sutera campus building. The building is made with a lot of big windows which can boost the air flow in the building. Not only the air flow, but also light of the sun can easily go inside of the buidling so that it will reduced the useness of electricity lamp.

Binus University has partnered with Pasir Mulya village for five years to develop tourism and cultural initiatives. The university focuses on educating the community about waste management and creative thinking, providing resources like tents, solar panels, and new toilets. In 2023, BINUS collaborates with the local government to enhance infrastructure, such as renovating homestay facilities and improving road conditions, with the goal of positioning Pasirmulya as a prominent tourist destination.

BINUS University provides dedicated pedestrian pathways (sidewalks) that are elevated above the surrounding road surface and adorned with trees and other plants. This design aims to enhance the safety of pedestrians by creating a distinct and higher walkway separate from motor vehicle traffic. Additionally, it adds comfort and a cooler atmosphere to the area surrounding the sidewalks. The installation of canopies around the pedestrian zones further enhances the comfort for walkers, particularly during rainy weather.

BINUS University offers affordable housing options for students through BINUS Square, which serves as accommodation for students. Active students can register to live as boarders in BINUS Square and enjoy various facilities, including a swimming pool, billiards, and more. Additionally, there is a special scholarship program for boarders that provides a reduction of up to 25% on accommodation fees. To be considered for this scholarship, boarders must register and participate in a selection and interview process to take on student roles within BINUS Square.

BINUS University encourages work flexibility by providing multiple campus locations and a variety of workspaces, allowing employees to work from different sites. This not only reduces the need for frequent commuting but also minimizes carbon emissions caused by vehicles. Additionally, BINUS University has implemented a work from home (WFH) policy as part of its response to the pandemic, offering employees the opportunity to work remotely when necessary. This combination of policies supports a more sustainable approach to transportation, saves time, and enhances work efficiency.

BINUS University undertake actions to promote the % of more sustainable commuting, some of the initiatives include:

  • Provision of electric vehicle recharging stations: BINUS University and E-Trans have partnered to reduce carbon emissions by promoting the use of electric transportation in urban areas. This collaboration aims to support sustainable development, particularly in reducing the environmental impact of transportation. Through this initiative, they seek to foster awareness and encourage the adoption of eco-friendly commuting options, aligning with global efforts to address climate change.

  • Shuttle Bus: BINUS University has a long-standing shuttle bus service for students and staff to travel between campuses. Registration is necessary To ensure sufficient availability of shuttle buses. This service reduces reliance on private vehicles, helping to decrease air pollution, while also allowing passengers to rest during their commute. Overall, it promotes both environmental sustainability and the well-being of the university community.

In addition, BINUS University promotes cycling by providing parking areas for bicycles and organizing cycling groups.


BINUS University provides shuttle bus for employees and students as an action to support sustainable commuting aspect from SDG. Total users of the shuttle is measured and counted to define which size of the bus that will be used for the transportation. Walking pavements are also provided as one of the mandatory facility in all BINUS University campus area.
