THE - 2022

BINUS University goes beyond its campus borders by extending its reduce, reuse, recycle policies to organizations and companies that collaborate with the university. This initiative encourages everyone in the campus area, including staff, guests, students, and lecturers, to adopt sustainable practices, such as bringing their own reusable drink bottles and bags. Waste management is streamlined with separate bins for organic and inorganic waste, facilitating more effective waste disposal.

Furthermore, prospective suppliers seeking collaboration with BINUS University are required to align with environmental sustainability principles, a condition outlined in the vendor guidelines (Page 5, Point 2.1.1 – No 11). This commitment to sustainability not only reflects BINUS University’s dedication to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) but also fosters a collaborative network that prioritizes environmental responsibility.

In alignment with its green campus initiative, BINUS University actively implements daily activities to curtail paper and plastic consumption. As part of this commitment, all staff members are encouraged to bring their own reusable bottles, effectively reducing the reliance on single-use plastic bottles. This extension to services underscores BINUS University’s dedication to sustainability and its ongoing efforts to minimize disposable items, fostering a more environmentally conscious and responsible campus community.

BINUS University is dedicated to minimizing disposable items, particularly in its canteen operations. The university takes a resolute stance against single-use cutlery and prohibits the use of disposable tableware made from plastic, paper, and styrofoam. This policy reflects BINUS University’s commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of disposable items. By prioritizing reusable and eco-friendly alternatives, BINUS University contributes to a more sustainable and responsible dining experience for its community.

BINUS University takes a proactive stance in supporting the environment through its policy for the minimization of plastic use. This strategic initiative aims to reduce plastic consumption and mitigate plastic waste. The university actively engages students and employees in this eco-conscious effort through consistent socialization campaigns. To facilitate proper waste disposal, BINUS University provides designated plastic waste bins and implements programs like “Binus Asyik Tanpa Plastik” (Binus is Fun Without Plastic) and “Be-Green.”

The impact of these initiatives is evident in the data on plastic waste reduction. In 2022, the weight of plastic in landfills significantly decreased compared to previous years. The average monthly plastic waste, which stood at 27kg from 2019 to 2021, saw a notable reduction to 18kg in 2022. This success underscores BINUS University’s commitment to sustainability and the tangible outcomes of its plastic minimization efforts.

BINUS University is committed to sustainable waste disposal practices, as outlined in its landfill policy. The university monitors and measures the amount of waste that is recycled versus sent to landfills. To further enhance environmental responsibility, water waste undergoes treatment before being used in the watering plants system. Organic waste is transformed into compost, enriching the soil for plants across the campus. Additionally, inorganic and plastic waste are meticulously organized by cleaning staff, contributing to an efficient and eco-friendly waste management system at BINUS University.

BINUS University demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices by addressing waste disposal concerns, particularly hazardous materials. Rector’s Decree No. 0136A (Part II, point p, s, t) outlines the university’s comprehensive approach to wastewater treatment and disposal. An exemplary initiative includes utilizing treated wastewater for plant irrigation in the building area, highlighting BINUS University’s dedication to repurposing resources responsibly. This policy aligns with the university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and emphasizes environmentally conscious waste management practices.

BINUS University is dedicated to enhancing services, particularly in the realm of food and supplies within the campus area. Rector’s Decree No. 0136A (Part II, Point r) explicitly outlines the commitment to ensuring that food in the canteen area is not only healthy but also sourced from trusted sellers who meet specified criteria. Furthermore, BINUS University prioritizes local sellers, as outlined in the vendor guidelines (Page 5, point 2.1.1, No. 12). This ethical sourcing policy aligns with BINUS University’s commitment to responsible and sustainable practices, contributing to the well-being of the community and fostering positive relationships with local suppliers.

BINUS University is actively engaged in waste tracking to gauge and analyze the amount of waste generated. Currently, this meticulous measurement is primarily implemented at the Alam Sutera Campus. The dedicated team at BINUS University undertakes this task, reflecting the university’s commitment to understanding its waste footprint and making informed decisions to enhance sustainable waste management practices.

BINUS University has demonstrated a commitment to transparency and accountability by publishing an annual sustainability report since 2020. This comprehensive report encompasses all activities and research profiles related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 1-17. To ensure accessibility and reach, the sustainability report is made available in two languages, Indonesian and English. This initiative not only showcases BINUS University’s dedication to sustainable practices but also promotes openness and communication about its contributions towards achieving the SDGs.
