THE DEVELOPMENT OF GRAPHIC DESIGN IN THE RENAISSANCE ERA

The word renaissance itself comes from the French word for “rebirth.” It symbolizes the transition from the Middle Ages, which were considered stagnant, to the modern era of innovation and exploration. In the context of graphic design—as you learned—the Renaissance also sparked major developments in typography, illustration, and book layout, especially thanks to Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press in the mid-loth century.

THE INVENTION AND SPREAD OF PRINTING IN EUROPE

The Renaissance marked a revival of classical literature and brought significant innovation in book design, typography, page layout, and illustration. Italian humanists and printers played a key role in redefining graphic design, moving beyond the influence of medieval illuminated manuscripts.

The 18th century saw a scientific approach to typography, particularly in France, where King Louis XIV commissioned a committee to create a mathematically precise typeface. This era emphasized structured type design, reducing calligraphic elements and focusing on geometric precision.
