With its cozy, tucked-away location, the caffehas earned its reputation as a “hidden gem.” The environment is inviting yet understated, making it a popular choice for small groups seeking a tranquil space for heartfelt conversations or “deep talks.” 

Sora Coffee also embraces a unique Japanese-inspired theme, reflected in its menu items, such as “Sora,” “Midori,” and “Kuroma.” This distinct concept appeals to a niche audience who appreciate its unassuming charm and serene atmosphere. 

However, Sora Coffee’s niche positioning and secluded location present challenges. The caffe’s visibility is limited, and its small parking area adds another layer of difficulty for potential customers. To stand out in Malang’s burgeoning coffee shop scene, Sora Coffee needs to amplify its branding to attract and retain its target audience. 

In June 2023, Sora Coffee attempted to address these challenges by rebranding its logo, marking a fresh start after a brief hiatus. The intention was clear: to rejuvenate its brand image, attract new customers, and build momentum in a competitive market. However, the results fell short of expectations. 

 The Problem with the New Logo 

Sora Coffee’s new logo was meant to signify a new beginning, reflecting a renewed energy and ambition. Unfortunately, it failed to resonate with both loyal customers and potential newcomers. The feedback was mixed at best, with many existing patrons expressing a preference for the old logo. 

From a design perspective, the new logo seemed misaligned with Sora Coffee’s established identity. It projected an image of a more professional, elegant, and upscale caffe. While this might work for high-end establishments, it clashed with the reality of Sora Coffee’s warm and modest atmosphere. The logo’s sleek and modern aesthetic inadvertently created a sense of exclusivity, making the caffeappear less approachable to new visitors. 

The old logo, on the other hand, was more representative of Sora Coffee’s charm. Its hand-drawn style conveyed a sense of authenticity, friendliness, and simplicity-qualities that matched the caffe’senvironment and values. Instead, it seemed to mimic the trends set by other “nugas” (study-oriented) coffee shops in Malang, such as Tomoro or Nakoa. 

While such trends might appeal to students and young professionals, they did not align with Sora Coffee’s unique positioning. The caffe’squiet, friendly, and understated vibe was overshadowed by an attempt to appear trendy. This misalignment further diluted the brand’s identity. 

In contrast, the old packaging was more effective in conveying Sora Coffee’s values. The use of cloud-inspired supergraphics and illustrative designs complemented the old logo, creating a cohesive visual identity that felt authentic and approachable. The aesthetic also resonated with the caffe’shidden gem persona, making it stand out in a crowded market.

The rebranding of Sora Coffee highlights several key lessons about the complexities of logo redesigns and their impact on a brand’s identity:
