In order to celebrate the 109th Birthday of Malang City on April 1st, 2023, the Malang City Government launched the official theme and logo for the Anniversary through a Launching event which was held at the Malang Creative Center (MCC) Building 2nd floor, Thursday (2/3/ 23). The theme for this year’s anniversary is “Independence, Resilience and Sustainability (Mandiri, Tangguh dan Berkelanjutan)”. The choice of theme contains the meaning and spirit of development that Malang City wants to achieve in entering its 109th year.
“Independence”, means that the City of Malang is determined to strengthen the momentum of post-pandemic growth and revival based on strengthening the regional fiscal pillars, food security, alignment with MSME products, creative economic competitiveness and local potential of Malang City. Of course, by continuing to develop the principle of cooperation for the progress of the nation.
“Resilience” means that Malang City is ready to face various economic disruptions, food issues, the environment, and the dynamics of the coming political year. Based on social capital with one soul and strengthening tolerance in diversity. Supported by a more professional, accountable and responsive bureaucratic transformation with the participation of all city stakeholders.
And “Sustainable” is that ahead of the development transition period, Malang City carries hopes for the continuity of efforts to achieve local development goals, in harmony with supporting national and regional priority agendas. And in turn contribute to the realization of the global agenda of sustainable development.
In line with the theme, the official logo for the 109th Anniversary of Malang City was also launched which was born through a creative process of a logo design competition conducted by the Government of Malang City through the Office of Communication and Information (Diskominfo) in collaboration with the Association of Indonesian Graphic Designers (ADGI) Malang Chapter. This collaborative approach is a continuation of the process that was initiated in previous years and is an important part of Malang City’s commitment to strengthening the competitiveness of regional resources and ecosystems as Indonesia’s Creative City.
The design process involved 109 designers selected through administrative and portfolio selection from a total of 163 applicants. A total of 5 (five) competent judges in their fields then curated so that 5 nominees were selected who entered the presentation stage and in the end a logo created by Mr. Fauzan Zahran (Binusian 2021, Visual Communication Design Malang Campus) was selected as the winner. The five judges who have dedicated their time and expertise in overseeing the 109th Anniversary logo competition for Malang City are Victor Abednego (Chairman, Academician), Andreas Sjah Pahlevi (Academician), Daru Redono (Design Practitioner), Papang Djakfar (Malang City Official Mascot Designer), and M. Zahir Fikri (108th Anniversary Logo Designer).
The custom design of the number 109 in blue color reinforces the iconic identity of the character color and age of Malang City. The design for the number “0” in the inscription 109 is inspired by the shape of stacked rock with various and wavy shapes, but can unite and balance into a structure that is tough, balanced and stable in sustainability. Meanwhile, the use of the official mascot for Malang City, Osiji, with one hand makes a high five gesture or high five, which means cooperation, collaboration and independence. Meanwhile, one other hand that is clenched also strengthens the symbol of toughness and independence.
The positive indications recorded in various performance achievements up to 2022 have also become an important capital to strengthen the steps in the official theme and logo for Malang City Anniversary. Among them, the economy of Malang City in 2022 recorded the highest growth record in the last 12 years (6,32%). The post-pandemic economic boom was accompanied by a reduction in the poverty rate from 4.62 % (2021) to 4.37 % (2022) as well as being the second lowest in East Java.
