The Silent Letter in English
Silent Letters is a kind of letters which may causes many people to be reluctant and find it difficult in learning English. Silent Letters are letters that are not pronounced, they exist but are not pronounced. It causes the writing to differ from the reading.
Silent letter is a non-formal term for certain letters in unread English words. There are two types of silent letters, namely Auxiliary Letters and Dummy Letters.
- Auxiliary Letters
Auxiliary letters are part of a series of letters in which the letters was one letter only to pronounce as the representative. Such as:
- /th/ there
- /th/ thing
- /sh/ share
- Dummy Letters
Dummy letters are letters that can be heard or not when pronounced depending on the word called. Commonly referred to as inert letters. Example:
- Resign. G is not read
- Malign. G is not read
- Malignant. G is not read
Apart from inert letters, there are also empty letters which are included as dummy letters. The letters in the empty letter are completely unreadable when pronounced or pronounced in a sentence, both consonants and vowels.

- Yachts. Ch is not read
- Ledge, edge. D is not read
