Lauren Hom is a graphic designer from Southern California. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in Design and Advertising. She is known for her bright colour palettes and playful letterforms, and has worked with companies including Starbucks, Google, YouTube and TIME Magazine. She’s also been recognised by Communication Arts, the Art Directors Club, the Type Directors Club and the Webby Awards, and is also the author of the popular blog (and now book) Daily Dishonesty.
Hom’s journey began much like many other designers’, as she grew up as a child with a passion for drawing and painting. She was born and raised in a small town in Southern California outside of Los Angeles. She then moved to New York City at the age of 18 to attend the School of Visual Arts, pursuing a major in advertising. Hom says that advertising was a clear choice for her as it combined her love of art with job security. During her senior year of college, Hom created a blog titled Daily Dishonesty on tumblr. Here, she shared her love for hand lettering, highlighting her passion projects, doodles, and everything in between. After about a year, her blog gained a following of over fifty thousand people as she became known for her quirky hand lettering style.
Following college, Hom graduated top of her class and landed an impressive position as a junior art director at a large agency. That job only took her nine months working in the design industry to know she was unhappy. Hom realized that she was working 60 hour weeks, which based off her annual salary, meant she was only making $20 an hour. When compared to the $75 an hour she was charging for freelance work, the choice to quit her job was a no brainer, granted she could find consistent business.
Hom is now 28 years old, and is based in Detroit, working as a freelancer full time. She speaks out about her career all the time, explaining how her career doesn’t even feel like work anymore. Working as a freelancer, Hom is able to make her own working schedule, averaging 25 hours working a week. This lifestyle has allowed her to expand her portfolio tremendously and in turn expand her following and consumer pool; with more free time to experiment with new mediums and/or new passion projects, she expands the number of people she can sell her content to.
