What is Font?

Fonts are a set of characters, usually letters, numbers, symbols and punctuation. Gont is distinguished by its size, thickness and style.

Font Size

Font size is defined by pixels. For example 12 pixels Arial means a font named Arial with a size of 12 pixels.

Font thickness

Font thickness means the thickness of the “line” or “stroke” of the font. Font thickness is divided – divided into regular, bold, and light terms. Regular or standard, is the default thickness of the font, while light means thinner than the standard thickness and bold is the thickest.

Font Style

Fonts can be italic condensed (or narrow), compressed, extended etc.

Apart from the three things mentioned above, fonts are also distinguished by design, orientation (from right to left such as Arabic letters), method of making (with pixels or vectors).

The Type of Font

Serif

Serif Fonts are a type of typography that consists of lines with small stroke marks that are easy to read. Serif is the original font of the Latin alphabet. Examples of classic serif fonts are Times Roman, New Century Gothic, and Palatino.

Sans Serif

Sans Serif Font is a typography that consists of simple stroke lines. This type does not have decorations or small strokes such as the tip of the Serif typographic character.

The term Sans Serif comes from the French “Sans” which means “without” and “Serif” which in Dutch means “line”. Some popular Sans Serif fonts are Helvetica, Avant Garde and Geneva.

Display

Display font types are also known as fonts for titles that are intended to attract the reader’s attention. This font is generally used for advertising on billboards, posters, book covers and also packaging. Designers usually use Display fonts with large size (> 14).

Slab Serif

This font is around 200 years old and originated in England. These “fat” fonts have quickly become popular and are used in many media ranging from signs on crates to pamphlets.

Until now Slab Serif is used for many designs. However, this font is more widely used by designers engaged in advertising because Slab Serif is large and thick so it can attract attention.

Hand Drawn

Using hand drawn fonts is a good way to add character to your design. Some fonts of this type are really made with hand scratches, but some other hand drawn designs are made by sketching first and scanned into the design application.

There is a type of hand drawn font that is very clean and easy to read. But there are also other hand drawn fonts that are more difficult to read because they contain character and are influenced by the mood of the designer when making them. There is no limit in creating hand drawn designs, for example by combining the types of art deco, thin, thick and so on.

Script

This type of font has several styles, ranging from casual, neat and also elegant. The script is made by hand which is based on the use of brushes. This type is popularly used as a wedding font for wedding invitations.

Retro

Retro types are commonly used to bring readers into the ancient era with creative letter cuts. Retro fonts are found in Serif, Sans Serif and Script font types. Retro is often used in big headline advertisements, packaging or various types of classic and vintage logo designs.

Dingbat

Dingbat is also known as ornament or printed character. Dingbat Font is a type of font that has shapes and symbols in the realm of alphabet and numeric characters.

There are many variations of Dingbat, such as pictograms, certain design elements, user interface elements (UI), buttons, illustrations and bullet lists. One of the advantages of Dingbat fonts is that designers can make them in various sizes and colors without the need for special edits.

Monospaced

Monospaced fonts were created to meet the needs of a typewriter. Monospaced is called a non-proportional font, meaning that all font characters of this type occupy the same amount of horizontal space as other fonts. Some examples of Monospaced fonts are Courier and Monaco, which are judged not by their beauty or ease of reading.

Novelty

Novelty fonts are considered as types of fonts that are not included in the main font category (serif, sans serif, Old English, script or cursive). One of these basic fonts is considered interesting and is used in the title. Novelty font types are very pleasant to see and collect.

Comic

Comic basic fonts are usually friendly, easy to read and most popular for use in comics and cartoon drawings. There are many types of Comic fonts that you can choose if you want to create a design with a comic theme.

When choosing this type of font, you should consider the ease of reading factor for the eyes and brains of all ages. Then, don’t forget to adjust it to the project that is being worked on. Generally, the basic font of Comic has a very specific task compared to other typography. Its use in cartoons and conversation columns in comics, this font brings its own mood that has a meaning of each.

Stencil

The basic Stencil font was created in 1937 by R. Hunter Middleton. This font consists of capital letters with rounded edges and striking main scribbles.

Blackletter

The Blackletter base font is also referred to as Gothic or Old English and is used for the Gutenberg Bible, the first book printed with moveable type tools. Blackletters are characterized by black textures and decorating “hats”. This type is a style that is complicated but easy to read.

Calligraphic

Calligraphic is based on an ancient writing technique that uses a flat tip pen to create unique and artistic letters. The movement and direction of the pen determine the thickness of the line. Writing this style is a form of art and is generally used for formal invitations or letters.

Typewriter

Typewriter fonts were created to represent the types and characters of letters produced by typewriters before the advent of the digital age. There are several different variations that are suitable for every project that requires a retro or vintage look.

Pixels

The basic font, known as the Screen Font, was created with the aim of filling in the computer screen display. Pixels look sharp because the structure is based on the shape of the box.

Pixels are popular because of their clarity although they are small in size. In addition, Pixel fonts are usually displayed in contrasting colors such as black and white, not gray.

Grunge

Grunge font represents a style that is hard, dirty and disorganized. This basic type of font is commonly used for designs in the 80s and 90s that represent a rebellious generation. The design at that time was heavy, messy and full of emotions.

David Carson, the famous graphic designer who created Ray Gun magazine, is also known as the Father of the Grunge font. He introduced this font as a new form that had never existed before.

Experimental Font is an experiment that combines several types of fonts into one font or makes a font but does not comply with applicable rules. Here we try to make a font as free as it is without any rules and out of the comfort zone. I choose “Blackletter” for my experimental font, because i like decorative font, i mix decorative font and blackletter font.

This font concept is empire but not war empire empire but fairy tale empire. so I made a magnificent elegant font but there was also a forest side of the fairy tale, then why didn’t the flowers and leaves give me the color of the leaves or flowers because the impression would be so elegant I chose the color of gold to get an elegant impression.
