Aztec Sun Stone Experimental Typography
Experimental font is a method of making fonts by setting aside some rules in typography like as the size that must be the same, ascended, descender, and several other rules. In making an experimental font even though it is not bound by rules but there are things to think about. We should know what will we make. Why?
so we know what we will do. Simply we have to have a plan and the final results. My experimental font was inspired by Aztec Sun Stone
First I want describe about the history Aztec sun stone (Spanish: Piedra del Sol) is a late post-classical Mexican statue housed in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, and is perhaps the most famous work of Aztec sculpture. The stone is 358 centimetres (141 inches) in diameter and 98 centimetres (39 inches) thick, and weighs about 24 tons short (21.4 tons long; 21.8 tons). Shortly after the Spanish conquest, a monolithic statue was buried in Zócalo, Mexico City’s main square. It was rediscovered on December 17, 1790 during repairs at the Cathedral of Mexico City. After being rediscovered, the sun stone was installed on the outer wall of the Cathedral, where it remained until 1885. Early experts initially thought that the stone was carved in the 1470s, although modern research shows that it was carved some time between 1502 and 1521. Sculpture motifs that cover the stone surface refer to the central component of Mexican’s cosmogony. State-sponsored monuments connect aspects of Aztec ideology such as the importance of violence and war, the cosmic cycle, and the nature of the relationship between gods and humans. The Aztec elite uses this connection with the cosmos and the bloodshed that is often associated with it to maintain control of the population, and the Sun Stone is a tool in which ideology is manifested visually.
After I researched it carefully. in the project about this experimental font. I found several conclusions. Visually Aztec sun stone has 2 main elements. that is, lines and circles, we can see that the Aztec sun stone is a circle that represents the sun and uses lines to make the ornament. Other than that there is something quite interesting, in the Aztec sun stone all the ornaments contained in this stone are connected to each other and become a unified whole. Those are some things that I will use in my experimental font.
The experimental font that I made is far from the rules or rules in making a typography. In terms of legibility of the fonts I made it is very difficult to read because it returns to the output that I use as an art medium rather than as an informative medium.
Besides the experimental font that I made is more towards the symbol. In the form I still apply rules like the letters A, I, and O. In plain view the font that I use is quite simple in terms of form. Only in the form of circles and lines. The basis of the font that I made also comes from existing letters, but I made it simpler by using only 2 shapes, namely circles and lines.
