Bandung has long been known as a city rich in creativity, innovation, and community-based craftsmanship. Continuing this spirit, a recent workshop for UMKM (Usaha Mikro, Kecil, dan Menengah) in Bandung introduced a unique and sustainable skill: creating eco-friendly soap crafted into decorative flower shapes with natural fragrances.

This initiative was guided by a dedicated team from the university’s Research Interest Group, led by Dr. Mulyani Karmagatri, S.Sn., MM., a respected academic and creative industry expert. Alongside her was Dr. Rosyidah Rahmah, S.Kom., M.M., whose background in digital business and management added valuable insights into product development and market readiness for UMKM participants.

Together, they combined creativity, research, and practical knowledge to empower local entrepreneurs toward sustainable innovation.

Under the leadership of Dr. Mulyani and the support of Dr. Rosyidah, the workshop focused on transforming natural, biodegradable ingredients into beautifully designed soap flowers. Participants learned how to:

  • Select safe, eco-friendly base ingredients

  • Incorporate natural colorants from plants, spices, and fruits

  • Blend essential oils for long-lasting natural fragrances

  • Mold soap into elegant flower shapes suitable for décor, souvenirs, or premium gifts

By integrating sustainability with artistry, the facilitators encouraged UMKM participants to create products that appeal to modern consumers who value both beauty and environmental responsibility.

One of the most engaging parts of the workshop was crafting soaps in the form of blooming flowers such as roses, jasmine, and lotus. Through the hands-on guidance of the team, participants discovered how these products can serve dual functions:

  • Home décor with a natural, refreshing scent

  • Eco-friendly souvenirs for weddings, corporate events, and tourism

  • Value-added artisanal products for gift shops, cafés, and boutique stores

The floral designs elevated the product beyond basic utility, making eco-soap a premium craft with strong market potential for Bandung’s creative UMKM sector.

The workshop went beyond crafting activities—it also introduced UMKM to essential business skills. Dr. Rosyidah shared practical strategies on branding, packaging, and understanding market trends for natural and eco-friendly products. Meanwhile, Dr. Mulyani emphasized the importance of cultural aesthetics and sustainability as Bandung’s competitive advantages.

The session enabled UMKM players to strengthen their entrepreneurial mindset through:

  • Hands-on crafting techniques

  • Branding and packaging insights

  • Market trend discussions

  • Networking opportunities among local entrepreneurs

Guided by the expertise of Dr. Mulyani Karmagatri and Dr. Rosyidah Rahmah, this eco-soap flower workshop became a meaningful step in empowering UMKM to develop competitive and environmentally responsible products. As consumer preferences shift toward natural, artisanal, and meaningful goods, Bandung’s UMKM ecosystem is well-positioned to thrive.

More than just a crafting session, the workshop symbolizes the fusion of sustainability, creativity, and community empowerment—values that continue to shape Bandung as a hub of innovation.
