Jakarta, 2 May 2024 – The creative and innovative spirit in Indonesia receives a significant boost with the establishment of Maker Innovation Spaces (MIS) at Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), with BINUS University as the latest addition. Funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU) through the Higher Education Partnership Initiative (HEPI) Project, these spaces promise to be hubs of ingenuity, collaboration, and technological advancement.
The Maker Innovation Spaces, inaugurated through a ceremony on April 22, 2024 at UNHAS; April 25, 2024 at ITB; and May 2, 2024 at BINUS University, mark a pivotal moment in the collaboration between Indonesian and U.S. higher education institutions, aimed at fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. The initiative aligns with Indonesia’s ambition to improve quality across teaching and programs to help get students job-ready before graduation.
“Innovation is one of Binusian values. The facilities will not only benefit our students but also help them to innovate. The new space will also bring the best of our students where they can learn the ropes, impact society, and continue to nurture this spirit,” said Dr. Nelly, S.Kom., M.M., CSCA
These spaces will serve as dynamic environments where students, faculty, and researchers can come together to initiate, prototype, and develop solutions to real-world challenges. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics prototyping kits, and woodworking tools, the Maker Innovation Spaces will enable interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on learning experiences.
Commenting on this collaborative endeavor, Jeff Cohen, Mission Director of USAID Indonesia stated, “The Maker Innovation Spaces represent a significant investment in Indonesia’s future. By providing students with the tools, resources, and mentorship they will be able to turn their ideas into reality. We are empowering the next generation of innovators and change-makers.”
Jeffrey Goss, Associate Vice Provost, Southeast Asia at ASU emphasized the transformative impact of such initiatives, saying, “Through the HEPI Project, we are honored to partner with our Indonesian counterparts in establishing these MIS. Together, we can catalyze innovation, drive economic development, and address pressing societal challenges through the power of education and collaboration.”
The launch event brings together university leadership, industry partners, and government officials, highlighting commitment to promote excellence in STEM higher education in Indonesia, nurturing innovation ecosystems and fostering cross-cultural exchange. Students, faculty, and experts are invited to join in shaping the future of technology and entrepreneurship.
