BINUS University’s Initiative for Sustainable Development
In a bold stride toward addressing the challenges outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), BINUS University launched its Empowering Society initiative in Batu Cermin, Labuan Bajo, and Wonokitri Pasuruan. This transformative project is designed to empower local communities while reinforcing SDGs such as quality education (Goal 4), sustainable economic growth (Goal 8), innovation and resilient infrastructure (Goal 9), peace and inclusive societies (Goal 16), and global partnerships for sustainable development (Goal 17).
A Collaborative Effort for Local Empowerment
Held from July 21 to July 26, 2024, the project exemplifies BINUS University’s commitment to sustainable community development through strategic collaboration. Partnering with the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) and BAPPENAS, the program focused on leveraging geospatial data and paradiplomatic strategies to address key local issues, enhance tourism potential, and strengthen local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Activities and Key Outcomes
The initiative kicked off with a comprehensive survey and focus group discussions (FGDs), where community members and stakeholders identified critical challenges and untapped opportunities. These insights laid the groundwork for targeted training sessions aimed at equipping participants with the tools and knowledge necessary for sustainable development.

Community Impact and Future Plans
The initiative left an indelible mark on the Batu Cermin and Wonokitri communities. Participants expressed newfound confidence in leveraging digital tools and applying innovative business strategies. Furthermore, the villages’ tourism potentials, enriched by their unique geological and cultural heritage, are now better positioned for national and international recognition.
Moving forward, BINUS University will continue to support Batu Cermin and Wonokitri through digital financial management training and periodic mentorship programs. These efforts aim to solidify the villages’ positions as models for sustainable community development.
