Jakarta, January 20, 2024 – BINUS University’s Bioinformatics and Data Science Research Center (BDSRC) recently hosted a Visiting Professor program in collaboration with the International Office, held from January 15 to January 19 to facilitate the exchange of expertise and knowledge in life sciences’ intellectual property through engaging roundtable discussions.
The program featured two distinguished professors: Prof. Dr. iur. Claudia Seitz, M.A., an Executive Master in Law & AI from the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein (UFL), and Dr. iur. Boris Riemer, a lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University.
One significant outcome was an improved understanding of intellectual property protection within the life science domain. Through roundtable discussions with faculty members from the Food Technology, Biotechnology, and Business Law Department, participants gained valuable insights. This newfound knowledge empowered them to forge collaborations with stakeholders, laying the groundwork for future partnerships.
The discussions also delved into digitalization, data rights, and protection in the life sciences sector, particularly in health and genetic data. Moreover, the discussions shed light on the European Union (EU) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act regulations, potentially serving as a model for AI practices in Indonesia. This knowledge, shared with faculty members from the School of Computer Science and Business Law Department, is expected to pave the way for adopting the EU AI model at the campus level and beyond.
“Do not discriminate AI against humans; humans can also make mistakes. The question is whether to trust AI and how. When and to what extent should it be regulated?” said Prof. Dr. iur. Claudia Seitz, M.A., an Executive Master in Law & AI from the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein (UFL)
Additionally, the team met with partners such as the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Institute of Agriculture STIPER, PT Mega Medica Pharmaceuticals (MMP), Masyarakat Ikan Gabus Indonesia (MIGI), and Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. These discussions centered around applying intellectual property (IP) protection to oil palm and fisheries.
