Singapore, 26 July, 2024 – Through the Green Campus Initiative Program, BINUS University brought together students, lecturers, and campus staff to exchange knowledge, engage in collaborative learning, and witness the transformative zero-waste strategies implemented by the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 22-25 July 2025.

This initiative aligns with BINUS University’s 2035 vision to become a world-class institution that fosters and empowers society. It also reflects our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in advancing Good Health and Well-being, Climate Action, and Affordable and Clean Energy. By combining education with sustainability, we reaffirm our dedication to improving the quality of life for communities worldwide. 

Through this program, participants blend theoretical learning and practical applications to drive impactful changes. such as seminars, workshops, academic discussions, conceptualization, efficient resource management, campus tour, and raising environmental awareness. 

During the visit, they engaged with Prof. Wong Nyuk Hien from the Department of the Built Environment at the College of Design and Engineering, who led a workshop on “NET ZERO SDE Building and Green Campus.” The discussion centered on integrating zero-waste principles in architectural design to enhance sustainability through effective waste and energy management. Advancements in technology, such as 3D printing and new building materials, offer opportunities to reduce waste and improve performance. By adopting these principles and promoting collaboration among industry professionals, we can work toward a more sustainable built environment.

During the BEAM Sharing session, students from both universities had the opportunity to explore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. They learned that while raising climate awareness is vital, it cannot be the sole focus of their advocacy efforts in this field. By emphasizing practical solutions and integrating elements of business, economics, analytics, and management, the program promotes a holistic approach to education and research. 

The activities continued with workshops focused on the application of the Steve tool and environmental improvement concept creation, led by Senior Researcher Dr. Marcel Ignatus. These sessions examined the environmental conditions at the National University of Singapore and microclimate changes in Singapore. Students were also guided on how to use the BEAM DT website at coolnus-beam.sg to track building temperatures and pinpoint heat hotspots.
