Jakarta — The Center of Excellence (CoE) Humanitarian AI & Technology organized the inaugural Summer School Program on AI and Sustainability, which took place on June 25-26 at the Anggrek Campus. The program offered participants the chance to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and sustainability in higher education institutions.
Dr. Derry Wijaya, Associate Professor of the Data Science Program at Monash University Indonesia, delivered a notable presentation on AI in climate change with Natural Language Processing (NLP). NLP is a branch of AI that enables computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language. It involves analyzing and manipulating text and speech through various techniques, such as text analysis and semantic analysis. Machine learning and deep learning models like BERT and GPT play a central role in NLP, aiding in recognizing patterns and contextual meanings. Common applications of NLP include language translation, sentiment analysis, and chatbots.
Dr. Wijaya showcased how AI algorithms can analyze large volumes of textual data to track climate change discussions and influence policymakers’ decisions using techniques like topic modeling and sentiment analysis. These processes involve text tokenization, lemmatization, and stop-word removal.
