As global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, and resource depletion become more pressing, universities play a critical role in developing innovative solutions. BINUS University has taken significant strides in sustainability through specialized academic programs that address both industrial advancements and environmental conservation. Two key programs—Product Design Engineering (PDE) and the Master of Marine Digital Technology—exemplify BINUS’s commitment to sustainability by integrating technological innovation with environmental stewardship.

Product Design Engineering (PDE): Human-Centered and Sustainable Design

BINUS offers a specialized Product Design Engineering (PDE) program leading to a Bachelor’s degree, which prioritizes human-centered design and sustainability within realistic constraints. This program is aligned with Indonesia’s Making Indonesia 4.0 initiative, integrating local wisdom with the advanced concept of Society 5.0 from Japan. At the Binus Aso School of Engineering (BASE), PDE fosters a holistic approach based on Breakthrough, Agility, Sustainability, and Empowerment.

Sustainability within PDE is realized through:

Master of Marine Digital Technology: Combining Marine Science and Digital Innovation

As the world’s largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia possesses immense marine resources. However, ineffective resource management and environmental threats, such as marine pollution and coral reef degradation, pose significant challenges. Addressing these concerns, BINUS Graduate Program, in collaboration with Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), has launched the Master of Marine Digital Technology.

This interdisciplinary program bridges marine science and digital technology. Some of sustainability-related courses are:

  • Habitat Restoration and Conservation
  • Climate Change Mitigation
  • Advanced Marine Pollution Management Systems and Ecotoxicology

Sustainability at the Core of Higher Education

Both the PDE and Master of Marine Digital Technology programs highlight BINUS University’s proactive role in addressing sustainability challenges. By integrating sustainability-focused curricula, research, and collaborations, BINUS ensures that students are equipped to drive environmental conservation, climate action, and responsible technological advancements.

Through these initiatives, BINUS not only contributes to Indonesia’s economic and industrial growth but also upholds a strong commitment to preserving natural ecosystems for future generations.
