BINUS University’s Waste Management Practices Earn National Recognition
Jakarta, 10 February — The active participation of BINUS University in waste management was recognized by UI GreenMetric at the end of 2024, but there is more to this achievement as the institution continued its efforts to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and creating a lasting impact on society.
Since 2018, our Building Management (BM) team at the Alam Sutera campus has produced nearly 200 kilograms of compost each month to enrich our gardens. They have also actively engaged our Binusian community, converting 450 kilograms of organic waste into 1,500 liters of eco-enzyme!
“For the continued success of this composting activity, we encourage students and all Binusians to actively help in resolving the waste accumulation problems, which are common in surrounding communities,” as emphasized by Prof. Dr. Lim Sanny, S.T., M.M., Director of BINUS @Alam Sutera.
This collaboration has enabled them to produce a variety of cleaning products, including soap, detergent, antiseptic, and other cleaning liquids with eco-enzyme, under the leadership of Dr. Dwiyantari Widyaningrum, S.Si., M.Si., Head of the Biotechnology Program. They have continuously improved these products and presented them in attractive packaging to engage the public at various BINUS University events, including the BINUS Indo-Pacific Forum in Bali, August 2024!
‘The soap, detergent, and antiseptic made from eco-enzyme have undergone lab tests and are completely safe, have been laboratory-tested and are safe to use, as they are free of bacteria despite being made from organic waste,” said Dr. Dwiyantari.
Additionally, the university regularly engages Binusians in organic waste processing each month. Over the past two years, we have transformed 450 kg of organic waste into 1,500 liters of eco-enzyme, and through collaboration between our Human Capital Team and PlasticPay, which collects and recycles plastic waste using Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) available in various locations, including Anggrek Campus and BINUS Square that encourage Binusians for processing the organic waste and participating in plastic waste collection.
In return, they earn points from PlasticPay, which can be exchanged for e-wallet credits. This initiative promotes responsible waste disposal and raises awareness about recycling, with PlasticPay and volunteers handling the collected plastics for reuse.
The joint efforts of Binusians in raising awareness and taking action for proper waste management have fostered a greener campus environment and significantly reduced waste accumulation in landfills.
As we continue this journey toward sustainability, we remain dedicated to embedding sustainable values into every aspect of campus life and empowering Binusians to drive environmental responsibility not only in our campuses but also within our communities, creating a lasting impact for a greener future.
