Impactful IP — Turn Your Research Into Real-World Impact | BINUS Technology Transfer
Impactful IP
Your research deserves to reach the world. Impactful IP is how BINUS measures whether it actually does.
— What Is It
IP — and what makes it “Impactful”
Intellectual Property (HKI) protects the innovations and creative works produced by BINUS researchers. But at BINUS, we hold IP to a higher standard.
An IP is classified as Impactful when it is actively used or promoted by an external party — a community group, industry partner, government body, MSME/UMKM, or alumni. It must go beyond the certificate. It must reach real users.
Two conditions must both be met to claim Impactful IP:
|
📄 Granted or Registered The IP must be officially granted by DJKI — or registered (applicable to Patents & Industrial Designs) in the same year. |
🤝 Implemented Externally The IP must have been used or promoted by an external partner — with evidence to prove it. The community or partner need to consist of more than 10 members. |
Example
A BINUS-owned software IP is actively adopted by an industry partner — not just demonstrated at a seminar. A photo of the partner using the software counts as valid evidence.
— Why It Matters
Why Impactful IP matters for lecturers
KPI
It counts toward your performance indicators — potentially twice
Every study program has 2 HKI targets per year: Standard IP and Impactful IP. A single strong product can be claimed across three PIs simultaneously — Impactful IP, Technology Used, and Product Commercialized.
Career
It strengthens your academic profile
Documented IP utilization carries real weight in SINTA scoring, Jabatan Fungsional promotion, and eligibility for competitive grants from BRIN and DRTPM Kemendikbud.
Achievable
It’s more accessible than most lecturers think
Implementation doesn’t require a licensing deal. A community using your video content, or an UMKM distributing your tool — with a screenshot as evidence — is sufficient to qualify.
Impact
It reflects real research impact
The Impactful IP target is one of BINUS’s quality objectives — a direct reflection of the BINUSIAN commitment to empowering society, not just producing papers.
— The Process
How to claim via the BINUS HKI App
The entire process runs through the HKI Apps platform.
Register Your IP
Submit your IP via HKI Apps → Sign the Surat Pernyataan & Pengalihan → Send hardcopy to RTT → Note in the comments if you plan to claim Impactful IP.
Submit Your Claim
Once your IP is Granted/Registered and implemented: go to HKI Apps Dashboard → Select your IP → Click “Claim Impactful IP” → Fill the form and upload evidence.
Required documents:
- Description of how IP is utilized (25–100 words)
- Name & type of external partner (Industry / Government / Community / UMKM / Alumni)
- Minimum 10 people in the partner organization
- Evidence: photos, screenshots, or links showing actual use
Evaluation & Decision
RTT reviews and validates → Feedback is issued → Score updated in the Rectorate Dashboard. Claims must be submitted within 1 year after the certificate is issued (or up to 1 year before if implementation happened first).
— HKI Types
What types of HKI can you register?
BINUS supports five IP types through DJKI. Detailed guides and templates for each are available via the portal link below.
| Type | Covers | Points |
|---|---|---|
| ⚙️ Patent | Technical inventions; longer process, highest value | 4 pts |
| 🔧 Simple Patent | Utility innovations; faster approval | 4 pts |
| ✍️ Copyright | Software, written works, videos, artworks | 1 pt |
| 🎨 Industrial Design | Visual and aesthetic design of a product | 1 pt |
| ™️ Trademark | Brand names, logos, and identifiers | 1 pt |
