INDEPENDENCE IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD: WHAT FREEDOM MEANS FOR FUTURE TRADE LEADERS

Every August, Indonesia celebrates its independence. Together we remember the struggles, the heroes, and the spirit of standing tall as a sovereign nation. But in today’s world, where economies are connected, borders are blurred by technology, and global supply chains define everyday life, what does “independence” really mean?
Back then, independence was about political freedom. Now, it’s about economic sovereignty. Every nation wants to compete fairly, produce with pride, and trade with strength. For Indonesia, the future depends on how well we engage with the global market without losing our identity. You, as future trade professionals, will be key to that mission.
Where trade flows across borders, so do ideas, values, and risks. Free trade can empower small businesses, but at the same time can also bring unfair competition. Technology allows open markets but can disrupt local jobs. Today’s independence means having the skills to navigate the complexity and turn it into fair, balanced outcomes for all.
As we celebrate Indonesia’s independence this month, here’s how you can celebrate it as an International Trade student:
- Learn international standards and make sure Indonesia meets and exceeds them
- Understand trade agreements and defend Indonesia’s interest with logic, not ego
- Support local businesses and help them go global
- Promote fair trade that benefits farmers, workers, and communities
Seventy years ago, our founders dreamed of a free Indonesia. Today, we dream of an Indonesia that is respected globally, competitive economically, and connected responsibly. And that’s where you come in.
Let this Independence Day remind you that you are continuing the legacy of freedom through economic strength, global collaboration, and national pride.
