Is using \u2018so\/very\/too\u2019 confusing to you? Well, you are not alone. \u2018So\u2019, \u2018very\u2019, and \u2018too\u2019 often confuse many English learners. Generally, they are used to emphasize or to intensify or to state that something is extreme and\/ or intense. However, there is more than \u2018intensifying\u2019 sense that you need to know, that is the difference in using them.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. SO and VERY<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    These two adverbs are used to express something in a great degree or to intensify an adjective or an adverb. So and very are synonymous with \u2018extremely\u2019. These two can be used in both positive and negative sense, but there is a difference in the sentence structure:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • So is used before an adjective or an adverb and cannot be followed by a noun (So + Adj\/ Adv)<\/li>\n
    • Very is used before an adjective or an adverb and can be followed by a noun (Very + Adj\/ Adv or Very + Adj\/ Adv +Noun)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Take a look at the following examples:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • The beach is so<\/em> beautiful (correct)<\/li>\n
      • The beach is very<\/em> beautiful (correct)<\/li>\n
      • It is a so<\/em> beautiful beach* (incorrect)<\/li>\n
      • It is a very<\/em> beautiful beach (correct)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Additionally, \u2018so\u2019 can be used to state a stronger \u2018a lot\u2019 when added \u2018many\u2019 (for countable noun) or \u2018much\u2019 (for uncountable noun). Here are some of the examples:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • There are so many people<\/em>\u00a0in the office today<\/li>\n
        • So much<\/em> water was spilled on the floor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          1. TOO<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Normally, \u2018too\u2019 means something that is more than needed\/ more than necessary\/ more than enough and therefore it is used in a more negative way. In the structure, \u2018too\u2019 is similar to \u2018so\u2019, that is used before an adjective or an adverb and cannot be followed by a noun (So + Adj\/ Adv). Check out the following comparison on how to use \u2018so\u2019, \u2018very\u2019, and \u2018too\u2019:<\/p>\n

              \n
            • The house is so<\/em> big (positive\/ neutral sense \u2013 intensifying that the house is big)<\/li>\n
            • The house is very<\/em> big (positive\/ neutral sense \u2013 intensifying that the house is big)<\/li>\n
            • The house is too<\/em> big (negative sense \u2013 expressing that the house is unnecessarily big more than it is needed to be)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              However, sometimes \u2018too\u2019 can also be used in a more positive way in certain \u2018friendly\u2019 situations, for example: \u201cThank you! You are too kind!\u201d.<\/p>\n
