In the last article (part 1), we have discussed five sets of homophones. In case you forget what a homophone is, it is a set of two or more words that have the same pronunciation but have different meaning and spelling such as \u2018to\u2019, \u2018two\u2019 and \u2018too\u2019. In this article, we are discussing five more homophone sets that are sometimes mispronounced by a few learners. The list is as follows:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Son, sun (\/s\u0245n\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A lot of learners mistakenly pronounce \u2018son\u2019 as \/son\/. In fact, the way you pronounce it is the same as \u2018sun\u2019. Both are NOUNS, but they have different meanings: \u2018son\u2019 means a male child, while \u2018sun\u2019 is a star in the center of our solar system.<\/p>\n

    1. Knight, night (\/na<\/em>I<\/em>t\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      English is known for its silent consonant. The consonant \u2018k\u2019 is often not pronounced if it is put in the beginning of a word, for example: know, knowledge, knit, etc. the word \u2018knight\u2019 also has the silent \u2018k\u2019 in the beginning, so it pronounced the same as \u2018night\u2019. \u2018Knight\u2019 is a NOUN meaning\u00a0<\/strong>a man given a special honor (or rank) by a king or queen, while \u2018night\u2019 (also a NOUN) means the time when it is dark, and people usually sleep at this period.<\/p>\n

      1. Right, write (\/ra<\/em>I<\/em>t\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Another silent consonant is the \/w\/ in the word \u2018write\u2019. This word should be pronounced the same as \u2018right\u2019 (not \/wra<\/em>I<\/em>t\/) <\/em>as some learners do. \u2018Write\u2019 is a VERB meaning making words\/ putting words on a paper\/ something else to express ideas. \u2018Right\u2019 is an ADJECTIVE which is a synonym to \u2018correct\u2019, or it can also mean the opposite of \u2018left\u2019.<\/p>\n

        1. Pair, pear (\/pe\u04d9(r)\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The word \u2018pair\u2019 is not pronounced as \/pei(r)\/; the correct way to pronounce it is \/pe\u04d9(r)\/, <\/em>which is the same as pronouncing \u2018pear\u2019. Both are NOUNS. \u2018Pair\u2019 means a set of two things, while \u2018pear\u2019 is the name of a fruit.<\/p>\n

          1. Hour, our (\/a\u01b1\u04d9(r)\/<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Often, beginners pronounce \u2018hour\u2019 as \/ha\u01b1\u04d9(r)\/. In this NOUN, which means a period of 60 minutes, the \/h\/ sound is silent, so it pronounced the same as \u2018our\u2019 \u2013 the POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVE of the pronoun \u2018we\u2019.<\/p>\n

            Thus, these five sets of words conclude our discussion in homophones. An English learner should also master the difference between homophone, homonym<\/em> and homograph. <\/em>We will discuss the trio in the next article.
