An English learner might already know a few sets of words that sound the same, but they do not have the same spelling. That is what we call \u2018homophone\u2019 \u2013 two or more words that have the same pronunciation but often have different spelling and meaning. Not only in English, many other languages in the world have homophones in their vocabulary. Since English has different vowel sounds and some silent letters, not to mention other language\u2019s influence, it requires the learners to be aware of the homophones to avoid misspelling in their writing.<\/p>\n

The following sets of words are included as homophones. You might have already recognized them:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Two, too, to (\/tu:\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In this trio, \u2018two\u2019 is a NOUN (the number after \u2018one\u2019); \u2018too\u2019 is an ADVERB which is the synonym of \u2018also; and \u2018to\u2019 is a PREPOSITION indicating a direction towards something.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Flower, flour (\/flau\u01b1e(r)\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      In this pair, \u2018flower\u2019 is a NOUN meaning a part of a plant, while \u2018flour\u2019 is a NOUN meaning powder made of grains. Although they both are from the same part of speech, these two have completely different meaning.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Their, they\u2019re, there (\/\u03b4e\u04d9(r)\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        These words are often confusing some English learners as they pronounce the same. \u2018Their\u2019 is a POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVE belonging to the pronoun \u2018they\u2019; \u2018They\u2019re\u2019 is the CONTRACTION of \u2018they are\u2019; and \u2018There\u2019 is an ADVERB.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Sweet, suite (\/swi:t\/)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          There are still some learners pronouncing \u2018suite\u2019 as \/soot\/ while it is incorrect. In fact, \u2018Suite\u2019 is pronounced the same as \u2018sweet\u2019 but have entirely different meaning. \u2018Suite\u2019 is a NOUN meaning type of room in a hotel, while \u2018sweet\u2019 is an ADJECTIVE (or noun) that means containing a lot of sugar (this is the adjective\u2019s definition).<\/p>\n

          1. Wear, where (\/we\u04d9(r)\/<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Some learners pronounce \u2018wear\u2019 as \/wi:r\/ while it should have been pronounced exactly the same as \u2018where\u2019. \u2018Wear\u2019 is a VERB meaning to have clothing or something on your body, while \u2018where\u2019 is a CONJUCTION\/ QUESTION WORD pertaining to a location.<\/p>\n
