The speaker, Mr. Akasa Dinarga, discussed the findings of a study on the benefits of international teams, highlighting the value of cultural diversity and the challenges faced in working with people from different backgrounds. The speaker emphasized the importance of cultural awareness, understanding communication styles, cultural norms, and hierarchies. A debate was initiated about the reluctance of Sakuga, a Japanese accountant, to ask their boss for a day off due to cultural expectations. The discussion also touched upon the legacy of a professional from Mass University in the Netherlands, known for their research on cultural differences in international settings and management.
The speaker discussed the concept of cultural dimensions, identifying six key traits that vary across countries. These include power distance, individualism, masculinity/femininity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and indulgence. The speaker used Germany and Japan as examples, noting that Germany has a low power distance and is more individualistic, while Japan has a higher power distance and is more collectivistic. The speaker also emphasized that these cultural traits can influence behaviors and attitudes, such as a person’s willingness to challenge authority or prioritize their personal interests over the group’s. However, the speaker also acknowledged the limit of this theory as it simplifies and generalizes complex cultural differences within countries.
