International Students’ Roles in Driving Social Change for a Sustainable Future

Jakarta, 25 July – Current global issues such as climate change and escalating social conflicts require immediate action. These issues are not just about the environment or politics—they are about the future of humanity. As the next generation of leaders, young people have a crucial part to play in addressing these challenges and shaping a peaceful and sustainable future.

International students at BINUS University are significantly contributing to building a more inclusive and collaborative society. Our involvement goes beyond helping others; we also create a network of future leaders equipped with empathy, creativity, a deep understanding of cultural diversity, and mutual understanding and respect. This exchange of ideas and traditions is fundamental in shaping a peaceful future, as it encourages tolerance and reduces cultural barriers that often lead to conflicts.

At BINUS University, we are committed to fostering and empowering society by facilitating community service, environmental initiatives, and cultural exchange programs. Through these initiatives, students gain the expertise and perspective necessary to emerge as proactive leaders in solving social problems and tackling global challenges.

One of the most admired initiatives led by both international and local students at BINUS University involved fostering empathy through artistic endeavors at a foundation for disabled children. Through their creative expression, these students have contributed valuable artworks beautifying the foundation and cultivating understanding and compassion within the community. Select pieces of art were sold, with proceeds directed toward supporting the foundation’s noble cause.

This initiative is a testament to the profound and positive influence that international students can wield within the communities they engage with. It demonstrates their capacity to make meaningful contributions that enrich the lives of others.

Our experience adapting to Indonesian culture equips us to address issues that affect us all, regardless of nationality or background. Thus, we contribute to a more inclusive and collaborative society while living in Indonesia and beyond, as we bring these experiences back to our home countries and wherever we go in the future.

The leadership and creative actions of BINUS University’s international students illustrate how education, empathy, and cultural exchange can drive social impact. By integrating the values and practices learned at BINUS University into our future endeavors, we are helping to shape a global community that is more connected, compassionate, and committed to a sustainable future.
