Navigating Challenges as an International Students in a New Country

Embarking on a journey as an international student in a new country comes with its unique set of challenges and opportunities. To make a smoother transition, I gathered insights from interviews with international and exchange students at BINUS University with the hope that newcomers adapt, learn, and raise awareness about potential obstacles as well as shed light on the support available for you.

To begin with, learning the essential words and greetings like “hello” and “how are you” or  basic counting lays a foundation for effective communication and adaptation to life in a new country. Not only that you can communicate easily but able to do many things – like asking for directions! It may not be easy at first but trying is the key here!

Adjusting to a new culture and building social connections can be challenging, potentially affecting academic performance. At BINUS University, we have the iBuddy program where you will meet pairs new  “iBuddies” who offer guidance on navigating the country, sharing cultural insights, and providing a friendly face during the initial days. The perfect program for you to overcome the initial hurdles of adapting to a new environment.

One notable challenge faced by many international students is the cultural shock related to the local culinary delight. You might need some time to adjust to the local flavor but you can always try cooking. Not only allows for a variety of flavours but also fosters a sense of home. So, a trip to the closest grocery shop or market can be an exciting itinerary to see the excitement!

I know that moving to a new country can be tough. Don’t worry because it might be hard at first but trust that you will enjoy the excitement from meeting new friend, tasting the local delight, and learn about yourself!
