Sustainability-Focused Curriculum Development at BINUS University

The Sustainability-Focused Curriculum Development initiative, led by the BINUS Center for Sustainability (BIC-SUS), is designed to systematically integrate sustainability and ESG principles across all levels of education at BINUS University, including undergraduate (S1), master’s (S2), and doctoral (S3) programs, as well as executive and industry-based learning.

This initiative responds to the growing demand for graduates who are not only academically competent but also equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to address complex sustainability challenges in business and society. Rather than positioning sustainability as a standalone subject, BIC-SUS adopts a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, embedding ESG concepts into existing curricula across various disciplines such as business, accounting, technology, design, and social sciences.

At the undergraduate level (S1), sustainability is introduced through foundational concepts, case-based learning, and exposure to real-world issues such as climate change, circular economy, and responsible business practices. Students are encouraged to develop critical thinking and awareness of ESG implications in global and local contexts.

At the master’s level (S2), the curriculum deepens into analytical and strategic applications, including ESG reporting (e.g., IFRS S1/S2), sustainability measurement tools (such as SPDI), and decision-making frameworks. Students engage in applied projects, industry case studies, and research-driven assignments that bridge theory and practice.

At the doctoral level (S3), the focus shifts toward knowledge creation and thought leadership, where sustainability becomes a central theme in research. Doctoral candidates are encouraged to explore interdisciplinary topics such as ESG governance, energy transition, sustainable finance, and the integration of local cultural values (e.g., kekeluargaan) into sustainability frameworks.

Beyond academic programs, BIC-SUS also extends its impact through industry-oriented learning and executive education, including workshops, certifications, and professional training in ESG practices. These programs are designed to upskill practitioners, align industry capabilities with global sustainability standards, and foster collaboration between academia and industry.

This initiative positions BINUS University as a leader in sustainability education, ensuring that graduates across all levels are prepared to contribute meaningfully to sustainable development, both in Indonesia and globally.
