BSSC International Class “Digging Deeper to Ireland”

BSSC International Class was held by the Self-Development Division of BSSC 12th Presidency on the 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th of June, 2022 via ZOOM. The main theme is “Digging Deeper Into Ireland”, meaning that all participants in this event will learn comprehensively about Ireland from Irish native speakers. It means that the information that the participants get is as raw and as trustworthy as it can be. We invited two native Irish speakers, namely Kira Sunario Lynch and Maya Sunario.

To briefly explain about the speakers, Mrs. Maya Sunario is half-Irish and half-Indonesian, while Kira Sunario Lynch is Mrs. Maya’s daughter and is a BINUS International Student. In this BSSC International Class, they Introduced the participants to Ireland, its languages, arts, and their culture in the first 3 weeks. The last week’s session was a bit different from the previous weeks, as we shifted from the Academic Class to the Game Session, which are the Crossword, Guess the Picture, and Quiz. Those 3 games that the committee provided are to sum up what they learned from the past 3 weeks.

The first day of BSSC International Class: “Digging Deeper into Ireland” was mostly about an introduction to Ireland, explaining about Ireland in general, starting from the Geography and the country’s signature. It was held on 9th June 2022 and the speaker talked about the location of Ireland, as many people had the wrong assumption about its exact location. They also explained about the History of Ireland with excitement, making the history lesson wasn’t boring at all.

Here, the audience learned about where the Celts came from in the first place and what kind of language they used in the past. Not to mention about the religion, which was adopted from their tradition. There were some videos in the middle of the presentation to deliver broader information regarding Ireland.

The second day was held on 16th June 2022. Day two of the event also went well, with the topic about learning the Irish language and arts, such as their phrases, conversations, along with artists, and music bands’ names. The material session went very well, even though it went overtime. In the rundown, the session should be 60 minutes, but it went overboard by 43 minutes in the event, so the session went for about 103 minutes. Despite that problem, both the participants and speakers enjoyed the flow of the event until the end.

On this day too, the event was more lively with more communication and interaction among the participants and the speakers. Here, the speakers interacted with the audiences by carrying out quizzes and small interactions, such as questions about the Irish language and its arts. At the end of it all, we can conclude that this day’s event was more lively than the previous day.

On the third day of the event, we learned about Irish Culture. It was held on 23rd June 2022, the materials that the speakers delivered were about Irish mindset, etiquette, festivals, Irish food and alcohols, castles and buildings, and the national sports. As it was mainly about the culture, it made the audiences know what habits Irish people have and how they act in their daily life.

Beginning with the explanation about the mindset, the speakers have invited the audiences to be active and keep the session interactive. As a native Irish, Mrs. Maya and Ms. Kira were able to deliver it very well and fluently, especially in the part of Irish foods, they gave some new insights to boost the enthusiasm of the participants and maybe even made some of the audiences interested to try to make the food by themselves.

On the last day, all the participants were playing games for the whole schedule. There are 11 participants that joined, so they were divided into two groups, Dublin and Galway. All participants played the game actively, from Crossword, Guess the Picture, and the final game, which is a quiz. The Dublin group ended up being the winner of the game with a total of 88 points, whereas Galway got 76 points.

The game session was divided into two, Crossword and Guess the Picture was played in the breakout room, and Quiz acted as the final game was played in the main room. The game session went well, except when  one of the gamekeepers got disconnected, so another committee had to replace him.

Mrs. Maya and Ms. Kira also joined the class, but they were not there to be the speakers, but to be spectators of the game session. They only observed and gave comments in some moments. They also shared about their experience being the speakers in this event, followed by other participants. The event ended with a documentation session and closing from the MC.
